IGUANA (1988 ITALY SPAIN SWITZERLAND U.S.) D/W: MONTE HELLMAN W: DAVID M. ZEHR/STEVEN GAYDOS P: FRANCO DI NUNZIO
Character actor Everett McGill (THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS) gets a rare leading role as Oberlus, a facially deformed seaman who jumps ship after being branded for practising voodoo (by Captain Fabio Testi), washes-up on a nearby island and declares himself King. Trespassers must become his slaves or die. Maru Valdivieslo is a Spanish aristocrat who eventually bares his child. Hellman`s first proper feature as Director since 1978`s CHINA 9, LIBERTY 37 (also with Testi) is an arresting, very matter-of-fact take on a remarkable story (based on a novel by MANAOS director Alberto Vazquez Figueroa, itself based on a short tale from Herman Melville`s Los Encantadas collection, itself based on a true story from the early 19th Century). The beautiful locations (including cave interiors) are on Lan Sorotee, in the Canary Islands. With Joseph Culp, Michael Madsen, Joseph Culp, Luis Barboo and Jack Taylor. I think it`s dedicated to Warren Oates (who died in `82). Hellman (who also edited) made SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT III next.
