GAMER (slayers; ultimate game) (2009 U.S.) D/W: MARK NEVELDINE/BRIAN TAYLOR P: GARY LUCCHESI/TOM ROSENBERG/SKIP WILLIAMSON/RICHARD WRIGHT
"Some years from this exact moment" and the Slayers reality tv/videogame show is a worldwide phenomenon. Death row inmates are "played" in a war zone by wealthy gamers, via a hi-tech control device injected into the brain. Gerard Butler stars as Kable, a longtime survivor about to win his freedom on his 30th game. Logan Lerman (PERCY JACKSON) is the kid who controls him. Ludacris runs the renegade underground group Humanz, intent on destroying the game. Michael C. Hall (DEXTER) seems to be enjoyying himself hamming-it-up as the game`s ridicilously wealthy criminal inventor. Made by the curious Neveldine & Taylor duo between CRANK movies (but released after), this ridicilously hyperstylish in-your-face mess of a movie could easily grate on your nerves (it might have on mine if i hadn`t been in the mood), but i kind of appreciate Neveldine & Taylor`s throw-it-at-the-wall-and-see-if-it-sticks approach, and this has many nice touches which indicate that they are a bit more selective of their zany set pieces than you may think (if you pay attention). You may find the retro 80`s-feel ending a letdown, but it kind of works on the same level as the so-called "hypnagogic pop" of James Faerraro (for example ) i think. With Amber Valletta, Kyra Sedgwick (THE CLOSER), Alison Lohman (who could play Linda Balir in a biopic), John Leguizamo, Zoe Bell (DEATH PROOF), Terry Crews, Keith David, Noel Gugliemi and Lloyd Kaufman of Troma.
