FULL METAL JACKET (1987 U.K.) D/W/P: STANLEY KUBRICK W: MICHAEL HERR/GUSTAV HASFORD
Matthew Modine stars (and narrates) as a soldier who becomes a war photographer in `nam. R. Lee Ermey is hilarious as the commanding officer who helps drive fat Vincent D`Onofrio to suicide in the first excellent half set in a basic training camp. Things slow down drastically once we reach `nam, but there is fine use of The Trashmen`s Surfin` Bird. With Adam Baldwin, Ed O`Ross, Arliss Howard, Dorian Harewood, Bruce Boa, Sal Lopez and Kubrick`s voice. This adaption of Gustav Hasford`s anti-war novel The Short Timers was Kubrick`s first since the disappointing THE SHINING, and he wouldn`t direct again until the disappointing EYES WIDE SHUT. Once a great director (THE KILLING, DR, STRANGELOVE, SPARTACUS), the opening 45 minutes of FULL METAL was the only truly great thing Kubrick directed over almost a 30 years period.
