FIEND WITHOUT A FACE (1958 U.K.) D: ARTHUR CRABTREE W: HERBERT J. LEDER P: JOHN CROYDON
Marshall Thompson stars in this great (and visceral for the time) sci-fi horror about an invisible force sabotaging a Canadian rocket base and the surrounding angry farming community (actually shot in Surrey, and it looks and sounds like it...but no matter!). It would have been a fun if unremarkable programmer, but really pays-off as the enemy becomes visible. Squishy flying brains that strangle with spinal chords attached! They are one of the great FX creations (not present in Amelia Reynolds Long`s fine short story basis The Thought-Monster) , and of course automatically make this a must-see. Peter Nileson and Ruppel & Nordhoff are credited with their creation. With Michael Balfour, E. Kerrigan Prescott (later in the films of Fredric Hobbs) and Kynaston Reeves. Richard Gordon was the Executive Producer. Douglas Hickox was the Assistant Director (he co-helmed his first feature BEHEMOTH THE SEA MONSTER the following year). Norman J. Warren (a major fan who put clips in his BLOODY NEW YEAR) has been planning to remake it for years, and the Hong Kong movie BLACK MAGIC WITH BUDDAH was probably influenced by it. Crabtree also made HORRORS OF THE BLACK MUSEUM for Anglo-Amalgamated, the company behind FIRST MAN INTO SPACE.
