EYES WIDE SHUT (1999 U.S. U.K.) D/W/P: STANLEY KUBRICK W: STANLEY RAPHAEL
Kubrick`s swansong (he died not long after it`s completion) was a problem-plagued production based on Arthur Schnitzler`s novel Traumnovelle (or actually "inspired" by it). Tom Cruise is a well-off doctor and family man who suddenly becomes aware of his wife (then real-life spouse Nicole Kidman)`s sexual fantasies and psychological infidelity. To cut a long story short, he ends up under the thumb of a strange sex cult. And nothing happens, nothing at all. The first three quarters of it`s 160 min. running time is fairly entertaining (if slow) with the tension, mystery and suspense building up nicely. But only to have it go absolutely nowhere. Imagine the disappointment of a rollercoaster pulling itself up a large peak only to just level out at the top and you have a good idea of what EYES WIDE SHUT is like. A waste of time. With Sydney Pollack, Marie Richardson, Thomas Gibson, Rade Serbedzija and Alan Cumming. Original cast member Jennifer Jason Leigh`s footage was all scrapped and re-shot with someone else.
