EVEN MONEY (hazard; the game; todlicher einsatz) (2006 U.S. GERMANY) D/P: MARK RYDELL W: ROBERT TANNEN P: DAVID GREATHOUSE/DANNY DeVITO/BOB YARI
Terrible, overlong and heavy-handed multi-character morality tale, with crippled cop Kelsey Grammer (in very convincing prosthetic make-up) as the Greek Chorus. Kim Basinger is a struggling writer with a secret gambling addiction. Forest Whitaker bets on his brother (Nick Cannon) at college basketball games and owes money to debt collectors. Tim Roth is a gay sadistic gangster. DeVito a failed professional magician, blah blah blah. The plot machinations are set in motion by the literal KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE, but this is no Cassavetes. I thought that at least it would be defiantly downbeat and realistic, but doesn`t even have the nerve to follow through with that. Most irritating and a waste of a fine cast, also including Ray Liotta, Carla Gugino, Jay Mohr, Texas Battle and Robert Miano. Rydell and Greathouse have cameos.
