DRACULA (horror of dracula) (1958 U.K.) D: TERENCE FISHER W: JIMMY SANGSTER P: ANTHONY HINDS
After the success of THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, Hammer made this even better first colour adaptation of Bram Stoker`s story. Christopher Lee IS Dracula and Peter Cushing is as good at Van Helsing as he is at Frankenstein. Lee`s Count does not shy away from the sexual, sensual overtones of Stoker`s novel and Hammer delighted in giving it`s audience (somehwat prim) raunchiness (and of course blood). The finale in which sunlight turns Dracula to dust is a classic. With Charles Lloyd Pack, George Merritt, George Woodbridge, Miles Malleson and Geoffrey Bayldon. James Bernard provides the score. The first official sequel was DRACULA, PRINCE OF DARKNESS, but they made the non-Lee THE BRIDES OF DRACULA first. Lee and Cushing were together again in THE MUMMY.
