DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1941 U.S.) D/P: VICTOR FLEMING W: JOHN LEE MARTIN P: VICTOR SAVILLE (uncredited)
Popular in it`s day, this version of Robert Louis Stevenson`s classic novella has been on the receiving end of anti-Hollywood backlash in recent years by horror fans who prefer the 30`s version. It`s true that this is not the classic that was, but it is a damned good (and dark and disturbing) psychological horror movie. Spencer Tracy is a great Jekyll and Hyde, Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner (who switched roles prior to filming) are well-cast and the transformation scenes (make-up by Jack Dawn) are excellent. And let`s not forget the remarkable Freudian dream sequence. With Donald Crisp, Ian Hunter, Barton MacLane, C. Aubrey Smith, Sara Allgood, Frederick Worlock, William Tannen, Frances Robinson, Billy Bevan, Forrester Harvey, Lumsden Hare, Lawrence Grant, Jimmy Aubrey, Hillary Brooke, Alec Craig, Al Ferguson, Mary Field, Frank Hagney, Winifred Harris, Brandon Hurst, Olaf Hytten, Colin Kenny, Claude King, Doris Lloyd, Aubrey Mather, Lionel Papa and Milton Parsons.
