DISCO BEAVER FROM OUTER SPACE (1978 US) D: JOSHUA WHITE W: PETER ELBLING/JEFF GREENFIELD/TED MANN/HARRY SHEARER/JOHN WEIDMAN P: TONY HENDRA
This 51 min. HBO special was the first extension of the National Lampoon humour magazine (and theatre group) into the filmed medium (it is also arguably the sole genuine NL-related movie, most of the others that followed in the wake of the same year's hit ANIMAL HOUSE having licensed, and cheapened, the brand name on a one-time only basis). Unfortunately it's a dated and staggeringly unfunny channel-hopping sketch parody, the title referring to an extraterrestrial (man-in-a-suit) beaver running around Manhattan. Other spoofs include a camp gay vampire in Dragula (the title stolen from a now-lost obscure 42nd St. item co-directed by the late Andy Milligan), with guest star Lynn Redgrave as Van Helsing, and some once-notable politically incorrect humour (a Senor Wences-a-like with a hooker puppet giving him a hand job). An obscurity not worth rediscovering.
