DER GOLEM (WIE ER IN DIE WELT KAM) (the golem: how he came into the world) (1920 GERMANY) D: CARL BOESE D/W: PAUL WEGENER W: HENRIK GALEEN P: PAUL DAVIDSON
The Golem, a mythical stone statue of Jewish legend that is supposed to come to life when it wears the Star of David and protect Jews from danger. Wegener had already played the stone avenger in his 1915 GOLEM and the 1916 THE GOLEM AND THE DANCING GIRL. Both are probably lost movies now but this silent b/w fantasy classic is available and should be seen by everyone interested in cinema. And not just as a worthy milestone to pretend to be entertained by, it is still utterly engrossing and enchanting (maybe even more so as the FX and sets are startling for being so ahead of their time). Check out the scene in which a magician entertains a higher court for evidence of this. With Greta Schroder, Ernst Deutsch, Otto Gebuhr and Fritz Feld. Karl Freund was the cinematographer (his work is amazing) and Edgar G. Ulmer his assistant. Ernst Lubitsch was the supervising director. The next version was in 1936.
