DEMONS (demoni) (1985 ITALY) D/W: LAMBERTO BAVA W/P: DARIO ARGENTO W: FRANCO FERRINI/DARDANO SACCHETTI
This ridicilous gore movie might be fun if you're in the mood. Michael Soavi (who was also the Assistant Director) is a guy in a metal half-mask who hands out free tickets for a teen slasher film showing at a theatre in Berlin. Soavi also has a part in the film-within-a-film that somehow infects the viewers and turns them into flesh-eating demons with glowing eyes. No-one can escape because all the exits have been bricked up. Urbano Barberini is the teen hero who's lucky enough to find a motorbike with petrol in the tank and a samurai sword (!), and is saved when a helicopter happens to crash through the roof! But my favourite charcter is Bobby Rhodes as a pimp. With Fiore Argento and Garetta Giancarlo, Bava and FX maestro Sergio Stivaletti. Why did it take four people to write this? Claudio Simonetti provides the memorable trash synth soundtrack. It`s a good example of how the dreamlike, operatic style and mood of Argento is better suited to trashier rip-offs of his largely original yet pompous and boring works (see also THE CHURCH for a good example). Followed by DEMONS 2.
