DEATH RACE 2000 (1975 U.S.) D: PAUL BARTEL W: ROBERT THOM/CHARLES B. GRIFFITH P: ROGER CORMAN
In the future a cross-country car race is the most popular sporting event. David Carradine is Frankenstein, the unbeaten leather-clad champion who's had most of his limbs and internal organs replaced. Sylvester Stallone and Mary Woronov are his main rivals. Points are gained by mowing down civilian pedestrians. An euthenesia clinic leaves wheelchair-bound cripples out on the road every year. A militant left-wing orginization try and sabotage the (televised) race. While Corman wanted a straight action flick, Bartel presented a satire. You can sometimes feel both parties struggling, but the finished product is nevertheless highly succesful (in both areas) and entertaining. With Roberta Collins, Martin Kove, Louisa Moritz, Don Steele and bit-parts by John Landis and Bartel. Based on Ib Melchior`s neat little short story The Racer. DEATHSPORT was the follow-up. Remade over 30 years later.
