DEADLY OUTLAW: REKKA (violent fire; jitsuroku: ando noboru kyodo den: rekka) (2002 JAPAN) D: TAKASHI MIIKE W: SHIGENORI TAKECHI P: TSUNEO SETO/KAZUYUKI SETO/TADAHISA SAKAMOTO
Riki Takeuchi gets to pull his usual jibs as a half-Korean yakuza underling who (along with friend Kennichi Endo) refuses to kowtow quietly with the rest of his gang after his boss is assassinated by a rival gang muscling in on their territory. Takechi wrote the same basic story for Miike`s AGITATOR, but this is a more action-orientated and cartoonish version with lots of violence and gleeful OTT touches from Miike, who`s obviously just practicing his directorial chops. A must for Miike completists, but more selective viewers can give it a miss, although it would probably entertain you. As the original title suggests, real-life gangster turned actor Noboru Ando "supervised", and may also appear (i could be wrong about that though). With Renji Ishibashi, Rikia Yasuoka, Tetsuro Tamba, Sonny Chiba, Ryosuke Miki, Daijiro Harada and the laughable Yuya Uchida, who returns as a hologram in one of the more baffling moments. The Flower Travellin` Band`s immense 1971 LP Satori is used as a soundtrack, and lead singer Joe Yamanaka (who died in 2011) appears.
