DEAD EYES OF LONDON (die toten augen von london) (1961 W. GERMANY) D: ALFRED VOHRER W: "EGON EIS" (TRYGUE LAURSEN) P: HORST WENDLANDT
Scotland Yard Inspector Joachim Fuchsberger (and camp, knitting comic-relief annoyance sidekick Eddie Albert) investigate the deaths of the heavily insured, seemingly at the hands of a gang of blind killers (including great Tor-look former pro-wrestler Ady Berber). Considered one of the finest of the Hamburg-lensed Edgar Wallace krimis of the era (and the first helmed by busy Vohrer), it is an enjoyable, atmospheric b/w mystery, but pales in comparison with the cracking classic 1939 version with Bela Lugosi, THE DARK EYES OF LONDON. I liked the human skull-shaped cigarette holder, the cat with light-up eyes warning bell thing, and a shot from inside someone`s mouth as they spray mouthwash! With Karin Baal, Klaus Kinski, Dieter Borsche, Wolfgang Lukschy, Franz Schahfeitlin, Hans Paetsch, Walter Ladengast, Gunther Jerschke, Joseph Offenbach and music by Heinz Funk.
