THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1957 U.K.) D: TERENCE FISHER W: JIMMY SANGSTER P: ANTHONY HINDS/MAX ROSENBERG
The British Hammer studios really hit on something with this gory (for the time), lurid color reinterpretation of Mary Shelley`s novel. Peter Cushing is the Baron Von Frankenstein who narrates the story from his jail cell (as he awaits the guillotine). Christopher Lee (before he was famous for being Dracula) is the pretty scary looking creature. Considered pretty racy stuff in it`s day, it`s aged very well even if it doesn`t stand up with the best of Hammer (or Fisher). Hazel Court is Elizabeth. Interestingly enough, it was originaly conceived by Milton Subotsky and Max J. Rosenberg whom would later set up Hammer studio rivals Amicus. The late Cushing and Lee would be horror heroes from here on and the studio churned out more bloodthristy shockers that changed the face of cinema forever, so it is important. THE REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN was next in the series.
