CUBE (1997 CANADA) D/W: VINCENZO NATALI W: ANDRE BIJELIC/GRAEME MANSON P: MEHRA MEH/BETTY ORR
This amazing and unique sci-fi (for lack of any other category to put it in) has a small goup of strangers trapped in a maze of 14ft sq. rooms (all different colours). They are connected by vault doors and some are booby-trapped (slicing wires, squirting acid etc.). The confused mis-matched bunch try and logically work their way out while arguing and going crazy. The cast is mostly unknowns: Nicole DeBoer, Maurice Dean Wint, Julian Richings and Wayne Robson. I guess the "star" is David Hewlett (from SCANNERS 2 and PIN). Filmed in a wharehouse in Toronto on an extremely low-budget, it`s a triumph of original storytelling and flawless production skills. Jasma Stefanovic was the set designer. A Japanese rental tape included Natali`s earlier short ELEVATED (see review). HYPERCUBE: CUBE 2 followed. I once had the pleasure of acting inside a "cube" replicated at Shibuya`s NHK studios for a tv parody (it was a massive hit in Japan).
