CRUISING (1980 U.S.) D/W: WILLIAM FRIEDKIN P: JERRY WEINTRAUB
Undercover cop Al Pacino (who's excellent) is hunting an impotent, gay serial killer in the sweaty underground gay S&M clubs of New York's meatpacking district. Many protesters condemned the film's portrayal of homosexuals as fetishistic perverts so a disclaimer was added to the beginning. Others praised it's accurate slice-of-life atmosphere. Whatever your views, it's a well-made thriller (reminiscent of a quality giallo) that has some pacing problems, and thought-provoking ambiguity that ultimately doesn`t cut it as anything deeper or illuminating. With Paul Sorvino, Karen Allen, Richard Cox, Joe Spinnell, James Remar, Powers Boothe, Gene Davis, Don Scardino and Jay Acovone. Based on Gerald Walker`s novel, itself based on a real-life case. The soundtrack mixes Willy Deville, the punk of The Germs and disco to good effect.
