COTTON COMES TO HARLEM (1970 U.S.) D/W: OSSIE DAVIS W: ARNOLD PERL P: SAMUEL GOLDWYN JNR.
This Black action comedy hit based on Chester Himes' novel deserves more attention. It was released before the more famous SWEET SWEETBACK'S BADASSSSS SONG and SHAFT, and is more fun than both. Godfery Cambridge and Raymond St. Jacques are Harlem cops Gravedigger Jones and Coffin Ed. They investigate a scamming preacher (Calvin Lockhart from THE BEAST MUST DIE) who has a stash of money hidden in a bale of cotton. Pretty funny and action-packed, with a lighter tough than the novels (for example, Coffin is not an acid-scarred borderline psychopath). With Cleavon Little, Red Foxx, John Anderson and Albert Hall. COME BACK CHARLESTON BLUE was a follow-up.
