CHINATOWN (1974 U.S.) D/W: ROMAN POLANSKI W: ROBERT TOWNE P: ROBERT EVANS
Private Investigator Jack Nicholson (at the top of his game) stumbles across a conspiracy to irrigate land with stolen water during a drought in a stone-cold classic neo-noir essential set in the L.A. of the 1930s. What can i add that hasn`t already been said about one of Polanski`s finest (the last one he made on American soil). The ending featuring Faye Dunaway and John Huston is still a shocker. With Diane Ladd, John Hillerman, Dick Bakalyan, Burt Young, Bruce Glover, James Hong, Roy Jenson, Rance Howard, John Holland, Jesse Vint, Noble Williams, Roy Roberts and of course Polanski slitting open Nicholson`s nose. Shot by John A. Alonzo, with a fine score from Jerry Goldsmith. Polanski made the incredible THE TENANT next. Nicholson directed the follow-up THE TWO JAKES.
