CHINA 9, LIBERTY 37 (clayton and catherine; clayton drumm; gunfire; amore, piombo e furore) (1978 ITALY SPAIN) D/P: MONTE HELLMAN P: GIANNI BOZZACCHI/VALERIO DE PAOLIS W: JERRY HARVEY/DOUGLAS VENTURELLI
Fabio Testi is given amnesty from a hanging if he promises to kill landowner Warren Oates so his land can be used for a railroad. But Testi and Oates get on fine, only to have their relationship sour when Oates' wife (Jenny Agutter) falls for Testi. This excellent low-key western was shot in Spain. On some Euro prints Assistant Director Antonio (Tony) Brandt is credited with the direction. But it's undoubtedly Hellman's work. With Sam Peckinpah, Tony Brandt and Luis Barboo and a great Pino Donaggio score. It comes highly recommended.
