BLOODTHIRSTY BUTCHERS (1969 U.S.) D/W: ANDY MILLIGAN W: JOHN BORSKE P: WILLIAM MISHKIN
Milligan`s most famous feature is a version of the Sweeney Todd legend, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The people he kills ("scum of the Earth") end up in meat pies at the local bakery (the most memorable scene has a woman`s tit in a pie). This very talky feature (with terrible cinematography) mostly deals with relationships, and the acting is surprisingly not bad (and the accents don`t slip too often). John Miranda is a particularly good Todd. Occasionally there`s some gore scenes with very rubber looking body parts, and a little nudity. I can`t imagine a modern audience finding anything of interest here (unless they are already fans of Milligan`s unique brand of very personal cinema). Many claim that it was actually filmed in London (including Milligan biographer Jimmy McDonough in his excellent biography The Ghastly One), but i wouldn`t be surprised if Milligan shot this on Staten Island (although he did definitely spend some time in England).
