BLOOD CREEK (town creek; experiment occult) (2008 U.S.) D/W: JOEL SCHUMACHER W: DAVID KAJGANICH P: PAUL BROOKS/TOM LASSALLY/ROBYN MEISINGER
In the b/w intro set in 1936, a Nazi occultist (Michael Fassbender) arrives at a German family`s farmouse in Virginia to examine an ancient runestone (left by Vikings) buried in the basement. In the present day Henry Cavill is awakened one night by his supposedly missing Iraq vet brother (Dominic Purcell) and taken to the farm on a revenge mission, the ageless family having sacrificed him to the zombie/mummy-like Fassbender, who drinks the blood of the living and is trying to open a third eye and rule the world. He can`t enter the house because of runes on the doors and windows, but can bring dead animals and people back to life and send them in there. Or at least that`s what i think happens, it`s a very confusing mess (apparently Schumacher took the script away from Kajganich and did extensive re-writes). That said, it has some pretty cool ideas and scenes, a nice pumped-up horror-action atmosphere in the ASSAULT ON PRECINT 13/NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD mold, and is never boring. Some of the VFX are a little dodgy though. It ends with hints towards a sequel, and i wouldn`t mind seeing one. With Emma Booth, and apparently a photo of Purcell`s PRISON BREAK co-star Wentworth Miller in a newspaper clipping. It was shot in Romania, and was Schumacher`s first out-and-out horror film since THE LOST BOYS. Kajganich wrote THE INVASION.
