BLADE (1998 U.S.) D: STEPHEN NORRINGTON W: DAVID S. GOYER P: PETER FRANKFURT/ROBERT ENGELMAN/WESLEY SNIPES
I was surprised that this expensive hit vampire/action movie based on a Marvel comic book turned out to be really entertaining. Snipes is a tough, emotionless but good semi-vampire who fights evil vampires with swords, guns and martial arts. Udo Kier is the head of a corporate board of traditional vampires overthrown by young upstart Stephen Dorff who wants to resurrect the powerful Blood God. N`Bushe Wright is the female co-star hematologist and Kris Kristofferson is Snipes` sidekick who makes weapons. The numerous FX (by Greg Cannon) are really impressive, and from the opening bloodbath techno club, pretty gory for a major release. The only part i thought was silly was when Dorff used sunblock to walk around in daylight. But apart from that, solid comic book action entertainment. With Donal Logue, Shannon Lee, Stan Lee (an Executive Producer), Traci Lords, Tim Guinee, Sanaa Lathan, Matt Schulze, Gerald Okamura (from Andy Sidaris movies) and Norrington. Goyer also wrote DARK CITY. Sequels followed.
