BLACK DRAGONS (1942 U.S.) D: WILLIAM NIGH W: HARVEY M. GATES P: SAM KATZMAN/JACK DIETZ
This b/w Monogram release opens with newspaper headlines reporting on the Pearl Harbour bombings. Then we see several white men at a high society cocktail social gathering asking lots of questions about military instillations in Hawaii. Why is that then? All will be revealed! Bela Lugosi turns up at one of the mens' house and exerts great control over him. Daughter Joan Barclay can't understand why. This trundles along for an hour or so, nothing special until the memorably insane climatic flashback where everything is explained. Turns out that those high society types are in fact Japanese spies! Bela was a German scientist who performed plastic surgery to make them look caucasian! They have no memory of this but don't seem to question their own unpatriotic actions. Bela wants revenge because his Japanese employers also changed his face against his wishes. This means that Bela with a beard was turned into Bela without a beard! Hilarious!! Bela promises "you will pay for this you apes!". A newspaper announces "Jap spy ring smashed" at the end. Unbelievable! With Clayton Moore, George Pembroke (THE LAST ALARM), Robert Frazer, Edward Peil Sr., Robert Fiske, Kenneth Harlan, Max Hoffman Jr., Frank Melton, I. Stanford Jolley, Bernard Gorcey and the familiar stock music of Heinz Roemheld. Don't miss this slice of patriotic propaganda, Katzman style.
