BEAST FROM HAUNTED CAVE (1959 U.S.) D: MONTE HELLMAN W: CHARLES B. GRIFFITH P: GENE CORMAN
A bickering criminal couple lead a small gang planning to steal some gold from a ski resort town. They stay at thier guide/ski instructor`s remote shack. An effective lumpy monster with long tentacle arms covered in a cobweb-like material grabs people and cocoons them in it`s cave where it drains them of blood. Roger Corman (Gene`s brother) was the Executive Producer of this effective b/w chiller (from Filmgroup) with good doomed characters and dialogue. But it`s not a classic (as some claim) and the ending is very abrupt. Hellman`s directorial debut is based on Griffith`s reworked THUNDER OVER HAWAII script (later used again for CREATURE FROM THE HAUNTED SEA) and was filmed back-to-back with SKI TROOP ATTACK. Hellman later expanded both hour long features by about 20 mins. for tv. Chris Robinson designed the monster. Ernest Laszlo got an early gig as the cinematographer. Hellman wouldn`t direct his own movie again for another five years, and then he made two (BACK DOOR TO HELL and FLIGHT TO FURY) back-to-back.
