THE BAD SLEEP WELL (warui yatsu hodo yoku nemuru) (1960 JAPAN) D/W/P: AKIRA KUROSAWA W: SHINOBU HASHIMOTO/ EIJIRO HISAITA/RYUZO KIKUSHIMA/HIDEO OGUNI
Toshiro Mifune uses marriage to help him avenge deaths caused by big business corruption in this low-key business thriller based on an unproduced screenplay by Mike Y. Inoue (itself based on Shakespeare`s Hamlet). It`s well done (even if it doesn`t rank with the director`s finest) and looks great in almost noir-ish b/w, (cinematography by Yuzuru Aizawa) but turgid and tough going at approx. two-and-a-half hours. With Masayuki Mori, Kyoko Kagawa, Tatsuya Mihashi, Takashi Shimura, Ko Nishimura, Takeshi Kato, Kamatari Fujiwara, Chishu Ryu, Seiji Miyaguchi, Susumu Fujita, Nobuo Nakamura, Gen Shimizu, Yoshifumi Tajima, Yoshio Tsuchiya, Kin Sugai, Yutaka Sada, Ikio Sawamura and Kunie Tanaka. A clean-shaven Mifune is excellent in a different role that demonstrates his scope of ability, and will be unrecognizable for those who`ve only seen him as a bearded Samurai.
