BACKBEAT (1993 U.K. GERMANY) D/W: IAIN SOFTLEY W: MICHAEL THOMAS/STEPHEN WARD P: FINOLA DWYER/STEPHEN WOOLEY
Surprisingly good and authentic look at The Beatles in Hamburg in 1960, concentrating on the doomed original bassist and artist Stuart Sutcliffe (Stephen Dorff handling his accent pretty well), and his love triangle with photographer Astrid Kirchher (cute Sheryl Lee, who goes topless) and John Lennon (Ian Hart on top form, his second time as Lennon after THE HOURS AND THE TIMES). Good actors play George Harrison, Paul McCartney and original drummer Pete Best (now there`s an unlucky man) as a hard-working, pill-popping rock `n` roll covers band on between strippers (the soundtrack has several interesting various artists covering the covers). Also portrayed are Cynthia Lennon, (briefly) Ringo and Tony Sheridan (the band backed him in a studio, and the original record is heard). Softley`s debut, he made the daft but fun HACKERS next.
