BACK DOOR TO HELL (1964 U.S. PHILIPPINES) D: MONTE HELLMAN W: RICHARD A. GUTTMAN/JOHN HACKETT P: FRED ROOS
A trio of American G.I.`s (top-billed former pop singer Jimmie Rodgers, pre-stardom Jack Nicholson and Hackett) aide local Filippino freedom-fighters in taking back their town from the Japanese during Pacific WWII. The battle of wits involves child executions, and is not so clear-cut good vs. evil hokum. That said, far from a war movie classic, but solid stuff. 20th Century Fox apparently added some more gung-ho stock battle footage after aquiring it from Lippert (who produced it back-to-back in the Philippines with FLIGHT TO FURY). In b/w, with Johnny Monteiro and Joe Sison. In 1967, Rodgers was the victim of a mysterious, possible "beating" from L.A.P.D. cops in San Diego that left him with brain damage and paralysis.
