ASSAULT ON PRECINT 13 (1976 U.S.) D/W: JOHN CARPENTER P: J. STEIN KAPLAN
After his debut feature DARK STAR, Carpenter made this unofficial RIO BRAVO remake with the action relocated to a police precint in an L.A. ghetto (the original shooting title was The Anderson Alamo). Austin Stoker stars as the cop who's assignment is to oversee the closing down of a police precint in a gang neighbourhood. A father who gunned down a gang leader who killed his daughter seeks refuge in the police station and a siege begins. The faceless, almost zombie-like gangbangers try and break into the station while Stoker and a couple of death row convicts in lock-up (including Darwin Joston) try and keep them out. Solid, cartoonish urban action thriller is pitched somewhere between NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and THE WARRIORS, and benefits from Douglas Knapp's spacious photography and a great sense of knowing, deadpan cornball humour. Carpenter provides one of his simple yet effective synth scores for the soundtrack. Tommy Lee Wallace (HALLOWEEN 3) was the art director. With Henry Brandon. Remade.
