APOCALYPSE NOW (1979 U.S.) D/W/P: FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA W: JOHN MILIUS
One of the most celebrated features of all time (not to mention a notoriously prolonged, troubled production that began shooting in 1976) deserves it`s acclaim, and despite the murky passages, builds to a culminative effect. Joseph Conrad`s (non-nam) novel Heart Of Darkness is the source material as Martin Sheen (who had a heart attack and flipped out during filming) stars as the Vietnam war Captain hired to find and terminate ("with extreme prejudice") A.W.O.L. Colonel-tuned-God Marlon Brando, living with his disciples deep in Cambodian territory. On a visit to Cambodia i was surprised to note how detailed and accurate the sets that were built for filming in the Philippines were. Vittorio Storaro provides the amazing, oscar-winning cinematography and Eddie Romero and John Ashley were the Associate Producers. As well as memorable bits from Dennis Hopper and Robert Duvall, there`s Frederic Forrest, Sam Bottoms, Larry Fishburne, Scott Glenn, Harrison Ford, Lee Ermey, Bill Graham, Colleen Camp, Cynthia Wood (Playmate of the Year 1974), Linda Carpenter, Jack Thibeau (and in the 50 min. longer Redux version only) Aurore Clement and Christian Marquand (CANDY). Joe Estevez was flown out to double for his brother Sheen for some scenes. Jim Gaines was an extra. The Doors are put to good use on the soundtrack. HEARTS OF DARKNESS: A FILMMAKER`S APOCALYPSE is the fascinating making-of feature. Nicolas Roeg returned to the source material for his HEART OF DARKNESS.
