A BULLET FOR THE GENERAL (el chucho quien sabe?; quien sabe?) (1966 ITALY SPAIN) D: DAMIANO DAMIANI W: SALVATORE LAURANI/FRANCO SOLINAS P: BIANCO MANINI
Mysterious (and dapper) Lou Castel (dubbed by William Berger in the English language version) is an American passenger who helps bandits led by Gian-Maria Volonte (who`s excellent) ransack a train carrying army munitions. Then he joins their ranks as a gunrunner, seemingly ruthless and only interested in profit. I couldn`t help thinking that he looks like Doogie Howser M.D. out-west! Klaus Kinski is Volonte`s religious fanatic brother in one of the best (and most political) Euro westerns ever made. Martine Beswicke co-stars, with Valentino Macchi, Aldo Sambrell, Andrea Checchi, Jaime Fernandez and Jose Manuel Martin. The ending is low-key yet rousing. Ennio Morricone was Musical Supervisor for Composer Luis Enriquez Bacalov. Shot by Antonio Sechhi. Years later Damiani directed the first of the AMITYVILLE sequels. Sadly most of his other features are fairly difficult to get a hold of with English subtitles.
